🔎 Google's AI agents and AI search upgrades

Google just showcased its new AI agent project 'Project Astra', alongside a slew of updates to infuse AI across search and enable Gemini to reason and take more advanced actions for users.

Progress on AI agents:

  • Google announced Project Astra, a real-time AI agent prototype that can see, hear, and take actions on a user's behalf.
  • The demo showcased a voice assistant responding to what it sees and hears, including code, images, and video — capable of advanced reasoning and recall.
  • Public access for Astra is expected through the Gemini app later this year.
  • Google also showed off 'AI teammates', agents that can answer questions on emails, meetings, and other data within Workspace.
  • Live is also rolling out in the coming months, allowing users to speak and converse with Gemini in near real-time.

Search upgrades:

  • Google Search now features expanded AI Overviews, advanced planning capabilities, and AI-organized search results.
  • Gemini will be able to execute more complex planning, such as planning, maintaining, and updating trip itineraries.
  • Search will also receive 'multi-step reasoning' capabilities, allowing Gemini to break down questions and speed up research.
  • Users can also now ask questions with video, allowing Search to analyze visual content and provide helpful AI Overviews.

We officially have a new voice assistant battle — with OpenAI and Google both showcasing mind-blowing new capabilities in just the last two days alone.

Also, despite rumblings of an OpenAI search product and excitement over platforms like Perplexity, it's going to be difficult to unseat the king of search. Especially as they integrate advanced AI across the entire ecosystem in an impressive fashion.

📱 Android phones enter the AI era

Google announced a host of new AI integrations coming to Android phones at its I/O Developer Conference, bringing its powerful Gemini model on-device to enable upgraded smartphone experiences.

The details:

  • Google's Gemini Nano model will be integrated into the Pixel later this year, allowing for enhanced multimodal capabilities.
  • Gemini features will be easily accessible with a new overlay, which improves and understand context to provide dynamic suggestions.
  • A Circle to Search feature, allowing users to query anything on screen, gains homework help features via a LearnLM model.
  • Google is also bringing a new AI security feature soon, providing real-time alerts on calls that appear to be scams.

While everyone awaits the iPhone AI announcements, Google's Android AI era is rolling. With Gemini coming directly on-board, the potential is there — but if Apple integrates ChatGPT, it may remain tough sledding against the dominant market leader.

📊 How have employees been using AI at work?

Chart Source: Harvard Business Review

A recent Gallup study of around 19,000 American workers found that, among those who frequently interact with AI at work, 43% use it to complete basic tasks. Nearly a third use AI for learning new things, while a quarter use it for identifying problems.

So far, workers' interactions with AI have been mostly solitary: Only 11% say they use it to collaborate with coworkers. That could soon change as tech companies release more tools to summarize meetings and brainstorm with colleagues.

💻 Prompt of The Day: Interview Follow-Up

Prompt: I had an interview this morning and it went well. I really want the job. Please write a professional thank you email to the interviewer for [job title]. The interview took place on [date] at [time]. Express gratitude, highlight that I was impressed with the team and company culture and that I am confident I will thrive in the role. Reiterate relevant experience or qualifications, restate my interest and ask about next steps. Also reference that we have a shared love of dogs.

You can adapt the prompt to your specific needs.

🤝 ChatGPT gets real-time Reddit access

OpenAI just signed a deal to access real-time content from Reddit's data API, which will now allow OpenAI to link discussions from the site within ChatGPT.

The details:

  • OpenAI will have access to Reddit's Data API, providing real-time, structured, and unique content from the platform.
  • In return, Reddit will leverage OpenAI's technology to build new AI-powered features for its users and mods.
  • OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner as part of the agreement.
  • Financial terms were not disclosed, but Reddit signed a similar deal with Google earlier this year reportedly worth $60 million.

With the new partnership, ChatGPT will be able to compete with the way xAI's Grok has automatic news updates through X by using Reddit news. Also, OpenAI's upcoming AI Search chatbot will likely benefit in a big way from Reddit's real-time information.

🧠 Generate multiple charts and analyses in one prompt with GPT-4o in ChatGPT

We've been playing around with OpenAI's new GPT-4o model in ChatGPT this week and we've found a couple of handy new tricks we'll be sharing with you this week.

To get multiple charts and analyses with in one go:

  1. Pick the GPT-4o model from the drop down menu at the top of the screen
  2. Attach a spreadsheet in the chat box (don't forget to anonymize sensitive data)
  3. Use the following prompt: Analyze this spreadsheet. Do deep technical and statistical analysis on it. Generate charts and visualizations.

You can right click on the charts to save the charts. And you can also instruct ChatGPT to compile the info in a PDF.

🎨 How to bring logo sketches to life

Adobe Firefly can turn your logo sketches into rendered images for free using a new feature called "Structure Reference".

Step-by-step:

  2. Select a logo sketch that will serve as a reference.
  3. Upload it on the left bar where it says 'Structure'.
  4. Edit the prompt to closely match your desired picture and experiment with other settings, such as aspect ratio, style, effects, or angle.
  5. Click 'Generate' and it will provide you with multiple images to choose from 🎉

With the new partnership, ChatGPT will be able to compete with the way xAI's Grok has automatic news updates through X by using Reddit news. Also, OpenAI's upcoming AI Search chatbot will likely benefit in a big way from Reddit's real-time information.

🎙️ How AI gave a young patient her voice back

Lexi Bogan's life took a major turn last year when she learned that a tumor had formed near her brain. An intense 10-hour surgery damaged Bogan's vocal cords, and the 22-year-old found that she could no longer use her voice in the way she'd used to. "It's almost like a part of my identity was taken," she told the Associated Press.

Then, doctors at Rhode Island's Lifespan hospital group asked if she wanted to participate in an experiment that might be able to help. They were looking for a candidate to try out a new voicebot platform from OpenAI called Voice Engine. Bogan decided to give it a shot.

How does it work? To learn the ins and outs of Bogan's voice, the model used a single, 15-second clip from a video she'd recorded in high school. Now, Bogan can type something into her phone and instantly have it read aloud in her own voice. It even works for laughter and other gestures that would ordinarily be hard to replicate.

Why it's important: Patients with vocal loss say it can be difficult to hear someone else's voice — or worse, a robotic-sounding voice — while using the types of prosthetics and electrolarynx devices that are common today. OpenAI is just one of several companies working on voice clone technology that can more accurately replicate patients' unique tone and tenor.

Net positive? Rohaid Ali, one of Bogan's doctors, said that for all the legitimate fears about AI voicebots spreading disinformation or impersonating real people without their consent, Bogan's story shows that the technology can also be a life-changing social good: "We're able to help give Lexi back her true voice and she's able to speak in terms that are the most true to herself."
